Grapevines are fast-growing climbing plants that need plenty of space. They will happily scramble over pergolas and arches, or can be trained along horizontal wires attached to sunny walls, fences, sturdy posts or the internal framework of a greenhouse.
Grapevines, whether grown for dessert fruit or wine-making, either under cover or outdoors, need regular pruning and training to keep them under control and producing good harvests. The two main options are the rod and spur system and the Guyot system.
Both indoor and outdoor grapes suffer from fungal diseases which affect the leaves and fruit. The three top grape diseases are downy mildew, powdery mildew, and grey mould. Four grapevine viruses have also recently been detected in the U.K. but are not currently known to be widespread.
Whether fruitful or not, a grapevine makes an attractive climber for walls and fences, with distinctive foliage that often colours up beautifully in the autumn. Both wine-producing and dessert grapevines are available, and if you’re looking for a new gardening challenge, they're worth the effort.
