My interpretation is that Ray killed those 2 complete amateurs, and the ending with his mischevious smile to the sound of the run song is more of a Don Corleone in Godfather 3, failing to be come legitimate. Like Ray failing his "legitimate try at life", he knows he never can leave his true life.
