SM7 hype mostly originates from USA where MD441, M88 and other nice European dynamic mics aren't as well known and SM7B is cheaper than e.g. RE20. The fact that it was used for the most sucessful record ever also helps. IMO MD441 and RE20 sound better in 99% of cases. SM7B isn't as directional as some people think.
Here's why: With an acoustic input of 84dBSPL - typical speech level at 3 inches, the output level of the SM7 is -69dBV. The mic preamp must increase the mic signal level up to about 0dBV - line level. -69dBV of mic signal, increased by +60dB of preamp gain, equals an output level of -9 dBV.
Sep 18, 2023 · The Shure SM7B is a dynamic microphone with a cardioid recording pattern. It can withstand loud noises with minimal distortion. Why is my Shure SM7b so quiet. The SM7B has a lower output than most mics -59 dBV/Pa (1.12 mV so needs a good amount of gain applied at your preamp or audio interface.
