Warning: This story contains Gotham spoilers up through the series' penultimate episode...

With Todd Phillips' Joker movie set to reveal the first big screen live-action Joker origin story since Tim Burton's Batman (one that seems set to drum up sympathy for the character who transforms into the Clown Prince of Crime), it's a great time to examine FOX's Gotham and the crazy, twisting road it took toward finally unveiling its own official Joker.

Gotham's series finale drops on April 25, showcasing a 10-year time jump that'll drop Cameron Monaghan's "J" into our eager laps. Gotham, as a series, has morphed many times in its own right. Back when it first kicked off, Batman and Joker were off-limits entirely - they could only be playfully referenced. So much so that fans wondered if they'd even get to see the iconic cape and cowl in the final frames of the last episode, Smallville style.

Things are a bit looser now. The show probably still won't be able to call out Batman and Joker by name - hence Monaghan's final stage bogeyman being called "J" for now - but Monaghan's purple-clad psycho is still a far cry from "Oh, this is just the proto-Joker who'll one day serve as the influence for the dude who'll eventually be the Joker on a show we'll never see."

    JEROME VALESKA

Shameless' Cameron Monaghan made his Gotham debut as Jerome Valeska back in Season 1, after series creator Bruno Heller stated, in some pre-episode press, that the character "may or may not be the Joker." Heller promised that this was not a "bait and switch" and that a "long game" was being considered.

Jerome was a young, murderous sociopath raised in a circus who snapped after years of abuse and killed his mother. He almost had Detective Jim Gordon fooled with a scared little-boy-lost act, but once he was finally cornered he gleefully confessed. Jerome was sent to Arkham for the crime whole Monaghan himself was praised for his spirited performance, putting his own personal spin on a ruthless psycho obsessed with comedy and lunacy.

    THE MANIAX

Jerome continued to be a bright spot of the series in Season 2 when he was brought back for a few episodes to raise hell as part of a band of sprung Arkham inmates called the Maniax. Though James Frain's Theo Galavan was the main villain of the half-season, Jerome and his crazed cronies (which included Barbara Kean) were an important part of Galavan's plan to become mayor (and ultimately sacrifice Bruce Wayne to his cult). Jerome would be killed - yes dead dead - by Galavan, as the would-be mayor made himself look like a hero on camera, offing his own secret henchman in a double-cross.

Despite Jerome being ostensibly dead, Season 2 was where the Jerome/Bruce connections started to build, as Bruce had publicly stepped forward at a charity event Jerome had hijacked - with a magic act that featured Barbara acting very Harley-esque - in an attempt to save Lee Thompkins' life. We didn't know at the time that some Hugo Strange hoodoo would bring Jerome back to life a year later, but when it did, Bruce became the target of his warped mind.
