Jul 22, 2024 · Idiocracy was produced by 20th Century Fox, so using Fox News as the infotainment network of choice made sense. But it also made sense from a creative standpoint, since Fox News is the home of sexed up anchors spouting reactionary nonsense and extolling violence.

- A VISIT TO DISNEYLAND SPARKED THE IDEA. Though Mike Judge had been jotting down some ideas for a movie about evolution as far back as 1995, the idea that would become Idiocracy all came together in 2001—on a trip to Disneyland, of all places.
- TERRY CREWS HAD TO AUDITION FIVE TIMES. Terry Crews was up against some "big, big names" to land the role of President Camacho, according to the actor.
- THE PRODUCTION DESIGNER HELPED JUDGE AND COHEN PREDICT THE FUTURE. (AND THE FUTURE WAS CROCS.) YouTube. "One of the big things was Crocs," Cohen remembered.
- SOME OF THE FUN GRAPHIC ELEMENTS WEREN'T SCRIPTED. Some of the logos, like Brawndo and Carl's Jr.' s new aggrieved look, were from Cohen and Judge's script, but graphic designer Ellen Lampl—working with Darren Gilford and the other designer—came up with the rest, like Nastea and FedExx.

Mike Judge (writer and director): The first time I got the rough idea was in '96. I was thinking about evolution. In our modern world, pretty much everyone survives, so what would that mean in the long run if you're talking about purely genetics? I very quickly had the idea of some kind of time-traveler-frozen-in-a-coma kind of thing. When Office S...
Darren Gilford (production designer): I remember having a conversation with Mike Nelson, who's the producer, back when I took the movie. And it was like, “Here's the money you have to make this movie; you either make it for this, or we're gonna find somebody else.” I remember sitting in that room thinking, “I'm gonna agree to do this movie knowing ...
Judge: I wanted it to look like an epic, Laurence of Arabia-like gigantic movie. I wanted it to look like a big-ass huge Blockbuster hit. Gilford: I did a bunch of concept art really early and I think I was overly ambitious. I did a bunch of stuff imagining what Washington DC might look like in the future, really dumbed down. I put a big Frank Gehr...
Judge: We actually had to shoot the Assmovie, which wasn't fun. Suhrstedt: They brought in about six guys with bare asses. Mike was literally saying, “I don't want any hair on his ass.” Judge: They just sent Polaroids to casting people; I should apologize to them for having to do that. Suhrstedt: We literally found a theater, a little bit south of ...
Judge: What would have been nice is to have a few more days of shooting because we were so rushed. Lampl: I think I worked for three weeks straight without stopping, sleeping at the studio off and on just because the demands were so great. Judge: At a certain point it went from a good vibe to thinking that this movie was cursed from the beginning. ...
Cohen: It was definitely disappointing but I was also really proud of making something that I thought was good. After thinking that it had disappeared, someone would tell you, “Oh, that was my favorite movie in college.” Hunt: I was disappointed that it didn't get a wider audience at the time because I thought Mike's work deserved that. It's such a...
