As a rule of thumb, plasma weapons are for taking down shields, and ballistic weapons are for doing damage once shields are down. You do NOT want to try using a Plasma Rifle to take down a Brute Chieftain, for instance, nor use an Assault Rifle to take down an Elite's shields.

Infinite on console doesn’t respond to controller input on every frame. It’s something like once every 4 frames @120fps, or once every other frame @60fps. Basically, your inputs only update 30 times a second. Infinite on PC reacts to your input more often, but not sure if it happens on every frame.
