Häkkinen married Erja Honkanen, a former TV journalist, in 1998. The couple have one son and one daughter. They divorced in 2008. Häkkinen also has two daughters and a son with his Czech second wife Markéta Remešová.
Unfazed by his shaky start, Mika pestered his parents—Harri and Aila—until they bought him a kart of his own. As Mika became an increasingly fast kart racer, the whole family—including his sister Nina—went racing for fun, forming their own little team and driving to races in a minibus.

He himself was a racing driver and won the Formula 1 World Championship title in 1982 with the Williams Ford team. In 1986 he retired from racing and a year later became Hakkinen’s manager. He also managed another Finnish driver J J Lehto. Subsequently, Keke’s son, Nico, became 2016 Formula 1 World Champion.
