Through the entire movie Balto's fur color changed many times from rust-brown or yellow-brown to brown-grey and dark-grey. In the official novel Balto is described as a grey wolfdog. In the sequels Balto's fur color still changes from light-grey to dark-grey and dark-brown.
The film portrays Balto (1919 – March 14, 1933) as a brown-and-gray wolfdog. In reality, Balto was a purebred Siberian Husky and was black and white in color. [27][28] Balto's colors changed to brown due to light exposure while on display in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
(Ironically, the real Balto did have black and white fur, so the poster is more historically accurate than the movie.) The cover of the reissue tried to fix this by giving him a more accurate color scheme, but also slips up by showing him with white sclerae (he actually has yellow) and giving him a too broad muzzle and nose.
Nov 25, 2020 · Balto’s story still hits home in several ways. There are lessons derived from adversity, courage, willpower, and so much more. It’s life in a nutshell in so many ways. It’s an essential movie that taught me lessons I still appreciate to this day. Plus, it’s based, albeit loosely, on a true story.
