Crutchy/Crutchie Morris is a Manhattan newsboy who is arrested during the strike. He walks with a limp and uses a crutch because he has a "bum leg." His nickname is spelled "Crutchy" in the movie and "Crutchie" in the musical.

His real name and the cause of his disability are not established in the 1992 movie or the 2011 musical. (Andrew Keenan-Bolger, the actor who originated the role on Broadway, said in interviews that he played the character as a polio survivor, and this information was later repeated in trading cards and in the official production guide, but it is not in the script itself. Matthew Duckett, who played Crutchie in the 2022 West End production of the musical, said that Crutchie's real name is Sean Hanlon and his leg was crushed by a trolley.)

In Newsies Jr., it is confirmed through dialogue that Crutchie's real name is Casey and he had polio.

His character was based on the real-life secretary of the Newsboys' Union, a boy named Crutch" or "One Leg" Morris.

In the 1992 movie, Crutchy is a secondary character. In the 2011 musical, Crutchie is a secondary main character with vocal solos, most notably Letter From The Refuge. In both versions he is mostly absent from the second act of the story.

The Delancey brothers pick on Crutchie because of his disability, but the other boys look out for him. He is shown to be tough and resilient, with a sense of humor. He is sometimes played as younger and more innocent, but in other productions (notably the 2023 West End run) he is Jack's trusted lieutenant and a co-leader of the strike alongside Jack and David.

Though it is 88 degrees during the strike, Crutchy/Crutchie wears more layers of clothes than many of the other newsies. In the movie, Crutchy wears long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and a vest, all in neutral colors, as well as a checked cap worn backwards. He uses his crutch on the right side, the same side as his weak leg. On Broadway, Crutchie ...
