When the show started in 1984, Britt Allcroft chose Former Beatles Drummer Ringo Starr as narrator, and he narrated the first two series in 1984 and 1986. When aired in the United States, Ringo re-narrated 41 episodes between 1989 and 1990 due to different words and societal norms. Ringo was also the first ever actor for Mr. Conductor in The Shining Time Station series. He left the show in 1990 to focus on his music career and tour with the All Starr Band. Ringo returned to voice Thomas in the 2009 Children in Need Charity Single.
Michael Angelis (UK: 1991 - 2012, US: 2004)
Michael Angelis was the longest narrator in the television series from the third series to sixteenth series, totaling 21 years. Angelis also re-narrated the Railway Stories originally narrated by Morris and Rushton. He played James and Percy in the working prints for Thomas and the Magic Railroad, but was later replaced by Susan Roman and Linda Ballantyne respectively because the American test audience thought that he made the characters sound old, for a brief period Angelis also did American narrations for four Series 7 episodes and two Series 6 episodes for the VHS and DVD New Friends for Thomas in 2004, done in a similar way to how Ringo Starr re-narrated certain episodes from series 1 and 2 for Shining Time Station.
George Carlin (US: 1991 - 1996)
George Carlin narrated the first four series in the United States version, he is also the first official American Thomas narrator after Ringo Starr left. George also took over for Ringo Starr for the rest of the Shining Time Station series. He left the show in 1996 to pursue his comedy projects.
