Looking at specific diseases, statins reduced the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by about 30% and reduced the risk of vascular dementia by about 7%. The relationship between statins and dementia is complex. Studies testing whether taking statins in later life to reduce dementia risk or improve memory and thinking skills have found no effect.

Statins are associated with decreased incidence of Alzheimer's disease, dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Each statin lowered the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases (NDD) with the exception of fluvastatin.

Jan 18, 2022 · In total, a pooled analysis of 36 studies found that statins were associated with a decreased risk of dementia (OR 0.80 (CI 0.75-0.86). For Alzheimer’s disease, the association with statins based on 21 studies, was also reduced (OR 0.68 (CI 0.56-0.81).
