Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects people's behaviour, including restlessness and impulsiveness. Symptoms usually improve with age but many adults continue to experience problems.
Most cases are diagnosed when children are 3 to 7 years old, sometimes later in childhood or as an adult. Discuss concerns with GP if you think your child may have the condition or if you're an adult who thinks they may have undiagnosed ADHD.
The exact cause is unknown but it runs in families and there are differences in the brains of people with the condition compared to those without it. Other factors include premature birth, low birthweight, smoking/alcohol/drug abuse during pregnancy and more common in people with learning difficulties.
For children, appropriate educational support alongside medicine can help manage their symptoms; for adults medicine is often first treatment offered along with psychological therapies such as CBT which may also help.
- Balancing work and personal life. Many people have trouble maintaining a sustainable work-life balance, and ADHD can complicate things further. Due to difficulties with executive function, people with ADHD may find it overwhelming to juggle both work and personal life.
- Focusing amid constant distractions. Difficulty focusing can be especially problematic for children in school. While the teacher is talking, children with ADHD may become easily distracted by their surroundings.
- Hyperfocus on specific tasks. ADHD isn’t just about the inability to focus, but rather having difficulty regulating your attention span consistently. Many people with ADHD experience bouts of hyperfocus, when they zero in on a task.
- Having an overactive mind. Adults with ADHD are especially prone to experiencing racing thoughts, which can lead to restlessness and insomnia as your thoughts keep you from resting.
