The eastern Painted Buntings molt before migrating south to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the eastern Caribbean islands. Their migration is shorter than the western group’s. The western group molts halfway through their migration; they stop in Mexico where they molt and then continue their migration.

Apr 18, 2024 · Unlike most songbirds, the Painted Bunting’s western population begins its fall migration before molting (shedding of old feathers so they can be replaced by new feathers), molts in staging areas in northern Mexico, then continues to migrate south.
- Males and Females are differently colored. Painted Buntings are sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females have different plumage. Males are multicolored with bright and vibrant colors, while females are more plain but still colorful.
