Very little evidence
- Despite finding frequent evidence for competition, we found very little evidence that plant-feeding insects conform to theoretical predictions for interspecific competition.

Jul 25, 2007 · The purpose of this review is to quantitatively assess whether herbivorous insects conform to the traditional paradigm of interspecific competition. Although several previous authors have addressed this issue (Damman 1993; Denno et al. 1995), we re-evaluated the evidence for two primary reasons.

Mar 7, 2019 · As predicted, we find that competition between herbivorous insects increases with population density as well as phylogenetic and physical proximity. Contrary to predictions, competition tends to be stronger between than within feeding guilds and affects specialists as much as generalists.

Interspecific interactions between insect herbivores can be either negative (competitive) or positive (facilitative) (Damman 1993, Denno et al. 1995). In the context of traditional community ecology, however, negative interactions have received the most attention (e.g., Lawton and Strong 1981, Schoener 1982, Strong et al. 1984, Denno et al ...

Interspecific competition in herbivorous insects remains a controversial issue. To date, many studied systems have not met assumptions of the traditional competition theory, and a new paradigm has been emerging.
