These small evergreen shrubs more than earn their keep, with long-lasting, colourful flower displays, often in winter when little else is in bloom. They are ideal for small gardens and containers or can be massed together in borders to create a tapestry of colours that change through the seasons.
Most varieties are fully hardy with a few exceptions, such as Erica gracilis and Erica x hyemalis (Cape heaths). Treat these as winter-flowering heathers for the greenhouse. Both require lime-free soil and regular watering.
- Erica carnea f. aureifolia 'Foxhollow' Erica 'Foxhollow' is an extremely colourful variety of heather. In early winter it produces bountiful blooms of pale pink and purple flowers that last until early spring.
- Erica carnea 'Pink Spangles' ‘Pink Spangles’ is an evergreen Erica that has won the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. It begins to produce light green flower buds in late summer which open in early winter into rose-pink flowers which darken as they age and last until the beginning of spring.
- Erica carnea 'Vivellii' ‘Vivellii’ is an RHS ‘Award of Garden Merit’ winning Erica with distinctive eye catching pink-purple flowers throughout the winter months lasting in some cases into early spring.
- Erica x darleyensis 'Darley Dale' Erica x darleyensis 'Darley Dale' is a more delicate variety of heather with clusters of pretty lilac pink blooms appearing in winter and lasting until early spring.
Most need acidic soil, preferably free-draining and sandy, in full sun. Winter-flowering cultivars will tolerate neutral or alkaline soils. For growing in containers, use ericaceous (acidic) compost with added lime-free grit to improve drainage.
Winter flowering types are mainly cultivars of Erica carnea or Erica x darleyensis. (Erica vagans types will also thrive in alkaline soil, but are summer flowering) The flower colours range from white through light pink, into deep pinks reds and cerise or purple.
Winter heath (Erica carnea), also known as winter flowering heather, spring heath or alpine heath, makes a wonderful addition to any garden or balcony as it blooms in the bleak months between January and April.
