- Although some women were apparently deacons in the earliest church, women were moved out of the office of deacon as the church hierarchy evolved, and, by the second or third century, into an office of their own as deaconesses. The deaconesses did for women what deacons did for men.

Mennonites founded the Bethel Deaconess Home and Hospital Society for nursing education and service in Newton, Kansas, in 1908. Over the next half century, 66 Mennonite women served there. They were unmarried but did not take explicit vows of chastity and poverty.
May 31, 2016 · Men from among the faithful should go through the deacons to have access to the bishop, as women should go through the deaconesses (DA 3, 12, 1-4). One deacon supervised the entries into the meeting place, while another attended the bishop for the Eucharistic offering (DA 2, 57, 6).

This view also makes sense because in the early church deacons didn't exercise spiritual authority over the church; deacons served the congregation.
Eventually in 1986 the Methodist Church agreed to re-open the Wesley Deaconess Order to men and women. At the 1987 Conference, 12 candidates were accepted for training for what was currently known as the Wesley Deaconess Order.
The deaconesses did for women what deacons did for men. This office evolved on the Eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea to fulfil diaconal roles among women that were thought inappropriate for men, such as anointing women’s naked bodies before baptism .
