They were also sold in drug stores, grocery stores, convenience stores, pretty much any place that could hold a magazine rack or a spinner rack.

Unsold Newsstand editions were in most cases destroyed. What we don't know for sure is what percentage of books were printed as newsstand and direct each year. However, its safe to assume that there was a gradual ramp up in direct production as the 1980's progressed into the 1990s.
