At age 18 Rocky won the Metropolitan A.A.U. welterweight championship. Despite the fame and money that professional fighting seemed to offer, Rocky did not want to become a serious prize fighter. He did not like the discipline of training any more than he liked the discipline of school or the Army.
September 27, 1946: In his first world-title fight, Graziano fought against Tony Zale for the NBA, NYSAC, and The Ring middleweight titles, but he lost via 6th round KO. July 16, 1947: Graziano went on to win the NBA and The Ring middleweight titles from Tony Zale by beating him via 6th round TKO.
During a brief amateur career, Graziano won the New York AAU Metropolitan Welterweight Championship. Graziano later said, "I got a medal, which I hocked for $15, and thought this can't be too bad a racket." Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942, but he soon went AWOL after punching an officer.
Graziano fought between the welterweight and middleweight divisions, but made his mark in 1945 when he knocked out welterweight contenders Billy Arnold and Al "Bummy" Davis. Then he scored consecutive 10th-round stoppages of welter champ Freddie Cochrane in non-title bouts and closed out the year by halting Harold Green in three rounds.
World Middleweight title. On February 7, 1947, the NYSAC revoked Graziano's boxing license and threatened to bar him for life for his failure to report two $100, 000 bribe offers. The NBA, which controlled boxing virtually everywhere in the U.S. outside of New York, did not recognize NYSAC's decision.
