    Nilsen is one of Britain's most notorious serial killers; his first murder victim was fourteen-year-old Stephen Holmes. Nilsen lived with Holmes' corpse for months.

    Nilsen lived a lonely life. He eventually met and moved in with a man, but the loss of companionship led to a murder spree.

    Born into a fishing community, Nilsen and his family were separated from the rest of society. He was close to his grandfather and traumatized after his death.

    Nilsen joined the army as a cook and traveled the world gaining skills he would use during his murder spree; he also began questioning his sexuality. After the army, Nilsen briefly joined the police force.

    Nilsen had trouble forming connections with people. While at a homosexual bar, he met David Gallichan. After two years together, Gallichan left.

    Nilsen found friendship with Martyn Hunter-Craig in 1978; hunter-Craig found Nilsen's behavior out of the ordinary.

    Steven Holmes lived with his parents and was a "typical teenager." By 1978, Nilsen's became increasingly odd. Hunter-Craig recalls the odd behavior. Nilsen felt lonely close to the New Year.

    Nilsen visited a new pub and encountered Stephen Holmes. Nilsen convinced Holmes to come back to his place for a drink.

    While at Nilsen's flat, Holmes became increasingly intoxicated. He decided to go to sleep; Nilsen soon joined him. When Nilsen awoke in the morning, he used a tie to strangle Holmes.

    Holmes gained consciousness, and Nilsen decided to kill him so he could keep his companionship. He grabbed a bucket of water, and drowned Holmes.
