Oct 1, 2011 · As a company grade officer, General Dempsey served with the 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment in Europe and the 10th Cavalry at Fort Carson, Colorado. Following troop command, he earned a masters degree in English from Duke University and then served as an assistant professor at West Point.
After graduating from West Point in 1974, Dempsey earned a master’s degree in English from Duke in 1984. He returned to West Point, where he was assigned to the academy’s English department. He served 41 years in the military during times of war and peace.
