As New Moon nights are dark, they are often the best time to view other celestial objects like planets, meteor showers, the Milky Way, and deep sky objects such as star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. Half of the Moon’s surface is always illuminated by direct sunlight, except during lunar eclipses when Earth casts its shadow on the Moon.
The short answer of it is that you cannot see a new moon at night. A new moon is not in the sky at night! It rises with the sun and sets with the sun. The closest you can get to "seeing" a new moon is a "waxing crescent" right after the sun sets, or a "waning crescent" right before the sun rises.
