Ship Rock is located 10 miles southwest of the city of Shiprock, New Mexico. The city and rock are both within the Navajo Reservation. There are a myriad of jeep roads in and around Ship Rock, but the road in the best condition is shown as BIA-5010.

Yes you can. You need to go south on 491 from the town of Shiprock. At about mile marker 85 turn west on Route 13. It is NOT labeled. The areas around the formation are closed to the public, the formation is on private property, which is sacred to the Navajo. You can see the formation from Route 13 which is paved.

Apr 11, 2024 · Visiting Shiprock in New Mexico is not easy. However, Shiprock Peak is visible 30 to 50 miles from the peak in almost every direction. The best viewing is west of Farmington along Hwy. 64 or south of Shiprock on Hwy. 491. It’s not legal to get to the base of the rocks, as it’s a sacred place for the Navajo Nation.

No Hiking or Climbing on Shiprock Today, it is illegal to climb the magnificent volcanic monolith; however, that wasn’t always the case. Throughout the early 20th century, people were intrigued by the idea of peak bagging Shiprock.
Nov 4, 2015 · We left the car at the base of Shiprock and started out hike clockwise, beginning at the largest dike. We soon found out that hiking down too far into the valley would take endless, so we tried our luck closer to the rock base which proved a very fascinating tour.
