In Wrath and Cataclysm the quests started to form more of a coherent story, but only with Mists of Pandaria WoW got something where you could follow the story. But you would have to play both factions and multiple classes if you really want to see everything that is relevant to the story.

Jul 3, 2023 · You’d do Cataclysm, then MOP, then WOD, then Legion, then BFA, then ShadowLands. You’d want to cap your level at 58 or so, because otherwise you’ll hit 59 or 60 and get kicked out of Chromie time.

At lvl50 you instantly get kicked out of Chromie time and lvl50-60 you must play in Shadowlands. Chromie Time is also only up for new characters so you cannot take your lvl60 into Chromie time, you must go with a new character. You can always simply go to the place as a lvl60 and start questing.
