Dec 12, 2023 · This guidance is for integrated care boards, health organisations and wider system partners and provides advice on how to improve the quality, accessibility and acceptability of care and support for autistic adults to meet their mental health needs, both in the community and in inpatient settings.
Although autism is not a mental health condition, people on the autism spectrum are more vulnerable to mental health problems. Research indicates that 70 per cent of children with autism develop mental health problems, while 16–35 per cent of autistic adults have a comorbid psychiatric disorder.
