Nov 29, 2021 · The model implementation presented accurately detects shipwrecks in remotely sensed imagery collected from large areas of the coast of the continental United States, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. The methodological approach can easily be replicated in other locations around the world.
Feb 8, 2024 · Working with maritime archaeologists at the sanctuary, we created high-resolution labels of shipwreck sites, distinguishing between background, ships, debris, and moorings. Figure B shows a sample label. Labeled data allows us to train and evaluate machine learning methods for detecting shipwreck sites in side-scan sonar imagery.
An automated tool to rapidly detect and map shipwrecks can therefore be used to create more accurate maps of natural and archaeological features to aid management objectives, study patterns across the landscape, and find new features.
Landscape models have been used in this way to predict shipwreck locations in the Mediterranean (Conlin 1999, Leidwanger 2013), off Australia (Duncan 2004), the Great Lakes (Caporaso 2011), and Norway (Törnqvist 2013).
