  2. Nov 26, 2011 · So my question is: can I go ahead and clip my SIM card now and then backup my iPhone 3G later without any SIM card, and finally syncing my new iPhone 4S? Or must I have my SIM card in the old iPhone 3G while backing it up?

    1.Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.

    iCloud automatically backs up your iPhone daily when iPhone is connected to power, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi.

If the iPhone is connected to Wifi it should be able to backup just fine even though there is no sim card installed.
