I think the only answer is that it isn't, not mechanically. The only difference from other runs are LV and killing monsters, and none of that is ever implied to affect Determination: Omega Flowey, for example, gets a much higher LV and isn't affected at all.
If Chara melted then Asriel would'nt laugh at the end, and would take more serious. it makes sense that they would be able to melt themselves and control it. Why? Chara isn't an human neither an monsters, so he can't melt, Chara is an soulless ghost human. and honestly, they don't even consider themselfs of an human, they call themselfs an "demon".
