Overall, Axolotls do glow in the dark, ideally the GFP Axolotls. However, Axolotls cannot glow on their own, and they will display fluorescence only under specific UV light, for instance, Blacklight.
Oct 21, 2024 · Only axolotls genetically modified with green fluorescent protein, and placed under UV light, glow in the dark (they glow green). This isn’t natural but is inheritable. Not all axolotls glow, and none do without UV exposure.
Aug 17, 2023 · The source of confusion about whether or not axolotls can glow in the dark is the GFP axolotl. GFP axolotls possess a gene that causes the synthesis of a special type of protein that glows in the dark when exposed to UV light.
May 28, 2024 · When it comes to the question of whether all axolotls glow in the dark, the answer is no. While certain species of axolotls, known as GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein) axolotls, have the special ability to emit a fluorescent glow, not all axolotls possess this trait.

Can an axolotl glow in the dark? If you mean glow in the dark, then no, a wild-type won't. A leucistic ( white ) shows up more when LED's are used. Most avoid it as the lights are too bright and scary for the axies.
May 26, 2024 · The green fluorescence exhibited by axolotls is a result of the interaction between the GFP protein and UV light. When UV light hits the axolotl's body, it excites the GFP protein, causing it to emit green light. This emission of light is what gives axolotls their characteristic glow in the dark.
May 30, 2024 · Scientists have genetically engineered axolotls to produce this protein, allowing them to glow in the dark. The purpose of this fluorescence is still not entirely understood. One theory suggests that it may help axolotls camouflage themselves in their natural habitat.
