  1. A collective lever is favoured by those who have flown helos, but if you're not familiar with it then you won't know and your typical joystick will work. Many people invert the axes to mimic what they see moving on the screen.

  2. May 28, 2020 · A short-throw joystick can work but makes controlling the helo more difficult than in real life. There are variations in different helos but if you picture an average cyclic stick 2 feet long with a travel of 10 inches minimum in pitch and roll, some almost twice as much, it becomes obvious than a 4-inch joystick won't provide the same amount ...

  3. Oct 4, 2023 · Modern helos with Force Trim, for example, H145, do not work well with joysticks with static centering springs, like your average fixed wing joystick. HPG and other devs realize that most people have traditition joysticks, so they created a hack.

Let’s start with the cyclic (“pitch” and “roll”) as well as the anti-torque pedals (“yaw”). You can search for “cyclic” (without commas, of course) and you will find a couple of axes: SET CYCLIC LONGITUDINAL AXIS and SET CYCLIC LATERAL AXIS. You will need to assign your joystick grip to these too. Back-and-forth movement should be set to the CYCLIC...

As for the collective and throttle (yes, they are different, check my video about that here), you will set your collective axis to, well, COLLECTIVE AXIS (just search for collective and you’ll find it). For those that have a physical hardware collective, the “lever” part of it should be assigned to this. For those that use the regular aircraft thro...

I’ve had a few readers asking me about these. A lot of folks have been using curves with several degrees of success! Here’s the thing: I don’t use them myself and I don’t believe there is a cookie-cutter solution. Curves influence controls and how the helicopter behaves based on how they are set up but different controls should be set up differentl...

A word of caution: I have seen folks having issues because they are finding the collective command, but they are not assigning their joystick/HOTAS/collective assignment correctly. Instead of assigning them to the COLLECTIVE AXIS, they are assigning them to other collective controls. This is a mistake I have seen happening repeatedly in the communi...

  4. Jul 20, 2016 · So, what can you do to make your joystick more helicopter-friendly? What's the problem with the centering mechanism? Well, helicopters require you to have a fine control over the aircraft.

  5. Jul 5, 2021 · I have a Thrustmaster T16000 HOTAS. Made a custom setup to use the stick only and it feels pretty nice. Got plenty of keys to bind anything I would need on a helo. Now it's time to learn how to land consistently.

  7. An extender is a great way to reduce the force you need against the spring, and get finer control. 10cm is ideal I think; with longer ones the stick and stay flopped over from its own weight. It helps if you have a way to mount the base lower. Here's an old post describing my setup.
