Foreigners can drive in Japan with an International Driving Permit (IDP) for a maximum of one year, even if the IDP is valid for a longer period. After the one year period, it is not possible to use an International Driving Permit again unless you leave Japan for at least three consecutive months in between. Japanese cars are classified into regular and light (keijidosha) cars, which are subject to different taxes and regulations. Keijidosha cars (yellow license plates) are smaller vehicles that must conform to strict size, weight and power restrictions. In return, they enjoy several tax and toll breaks, and relaxed ownership regulations that make them...
Gas stations are found all across Japan. They traditionally provide full service, although self service stations have greatly increased over recent years. Many gas stations close during the night, while others are open 24 hours. A liter of regular gasoline costs roughly 170 yen(as of March 2024). High octane gas and diesel are also widely available...

- Rental shops can have different age limits. The first thing we noticed was that car rental shops in Japan have varying age requirements for drivers. For example, our rental car from Toyota Rent A Car, had a minimum rental age of 18 years old and at least one year of driving experience, whereas Nippon Rent-a-car has a minimum age of 20.
- International Driving Permit (IDP) is required. The permit costs S$20 and you can apply it online at the Automobile Association website (at least two weeks in advance) or get it immediately in person at any AA Centre — there are three in Singapore (near Redhill, Geylang Bahru, and Ang Mo Kio MRT Stations).
- Rent the car online ahead of time. While walk-ins are possible during shoulder seasons in Japan, it’s best to book them in advance. The problem with many car rental websites is that most of them are in Japanese so it’s hard to compare prices when you’re unsure what’s covered and what isn’t.
- Get car insurance. It may seem tempting to skimp on car insurance — don’t. In the event of any *touchwood* unfortunate events, scratches, and other car damages, expenses can easily rack up to a high figure!
For travelers temporarily visiting Japan, you will either be required to bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) under the Geneva Convention of 1949, or a driver’s license from your own country with a valid legal translation of your license, which can be ordered from the company Driving-Japan.
Can I drive in Japan with US, UK, Singapore (etc etc) licence? Yes you can. You will need to bring an international driving licence, also called IDP (International Driving Permit).
