A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist CANNOT open a private practice as an LLC in California. The California Corporations Code does not certify LLCs (Limited Liability Companies) for the purpose of practicing marriage and family therapy.

Once your Application for Licensure has been approved, you may sign up to take the LMFT California Clinical Exam. You must take the exam within one year from the date your Application for Licensure is approved. The “Exams” tab of the Board’s website includes a link to the Candidate Handbook, which contains the exam’s content outline.
You can retake the exam after the waiting period specified in the Candidate Handbook. You will have a one-year deadline to retake the exam from the date of your last attempt.
