I would not recommend Minna no Nihongo as a "self-study alone" book. I would recommend it if you have someone to guide you through it (a Japanese tutor, either a native or someone further along in their studies). If you're studying for N5, I would recommend a book designed to study for N5.

Jun 30, 2018 · Today I'll share my Minna no Nihongo I study routine. After having been able to consistently go through 9 chapters without any teacher, I'm positive that this famous (or notorious) textbook series is decent (if not good) for self-study.
Minna is primarily good at helping with grammar and reading comprehension. You can get quite a bit of vocab and Kanji out of it, but at the end of the day it's a grammar textbook. Don't be afraid to use Jisho, Yomichan, and other internet resources when you get a little confused about something.
I'm self studying with MNN these days (on book 2 at the moment). I use wanikani for kanji study, bunpro on the MNN paths to drill and review grammar, and an anki deck with MNN vocab separated by lesson, to review vocab and learn new vocab for whatever the next lesson is.
