- Thanks to its rather slow growth, Erica heather is very well suited to being grown in pots. You’ll be surprised to see that this plant can stay for years in the same old 12 inch (30 cm)-deep pot. Be careful though to water regularly, since soil dries up much faster in pots, especially in summer.

Most ericas prefer a pH of 5.5 to 6.5, although some, such as darleyensis will tolerate a higher pH. If you find that your soil is too alkaline for ericas, you can still grow them in containers, using ericaceous (acidic) compost. Ericas also like free-draining soil, and once settled in are fairly tolerant of drought.

Aug 15, 2022 · Heather is a flowering evergreen shrub that can grow well in pots. Growing Heather in pots allows for more flexible placement options like on a patio, balcony, or front porch. Potted Heather plants can also live in climates that may not typically be suitable for this perennial bush.
Botanical name: Erica. Common name: Heath, heather. These small evergreen shrubs more than earn their keep, with long-lasting, colourful flower displays, often in winter when little else is in bloom. They are ideal for small gardens and containers or can be massed together in borders to create a tapestry of colours that change through the seasons.
Oct 21, 2024 · Heather is a little fussy about the type of compost in which it is grown, but the good news is that planting it in a pot gives you far greater control over this aspect. “Soil type is very important and although the Erica x darleyensis and Erica carnea varieties will tolerate most soils, E. calluna varieties require an acidic soil,” warns Irene.
Check plant labels carefully before buying. If your soil is too alkaline, simply grow heathers in containers of acidic (ericaceous) compost. See our. As heathers are compact, they're ideal for small gardens and containers – it's easy to put together a colourful array in very little space.
