Season 1 and 2 were all about surviving under the dome and figuring out their problems. Yes, there was obviously some sci-fi stuff in it, but it went from a sprinkle here and little rain storm there to an entire hurricane of sci-fi that literally made no sense.
Season three didn't start out as the final season, but during production the producers started getting the sense that there was not going to be a renewal, so knew they had to deliver an ending that could conclude the series, but leaving the door open in case it was renewed at the last minute.
