  1. Oct 6, 2022 · For those looking to get their psycho-killer fix from a book, try My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones, which NPR describes as "a beautiful love letter to horror movies." Jones certainly ...

    • Shock Value by Jason Zinoman. The greatest thing about this book is that it tells a story. It’s about how a handful of people from all walks of life, people like George Romero, Wes Craven, John Carpenter and Dan O’ Bannon, all happened to pursue their creative dreams at roughly the same time and wound up essentially inventing modern horror.
    • Fangoria’s 101 Best Horror Movies You’ve Never Seen by Adam Lukeman. I cannot stress how many favorites I found through this one. It’s so useful. Some of the titles might be a little more mainstream now—I’m pretty sure most everyone knows Ginger Snaps at this point—but I promise that you’ll find something on there you’ve never seen, maybe not even heard about.
    • The Rough Guide to Horror Movies by Alan Jones. If you’re going to pick up one book to start with, I really recommend this one. It has a bit of everything and covers most of the bases, from their picks for the fifty best horror movies ever made, to genre history, to brief biographies of major directors and actors in the genre.
    • Terror on Tape by James O’Neill. Okay, this book is out of print for a lot of reasons but still worth checking out if you can find a copy. If you’re nostalgic for the video store days, it’s great.
    • Italian Gothic Horror Films, 1970-1979. Roberto Curti. (You?) | 2017 | 4.55. Italian Gothic horror films of the 1970s were influenced by the violent giallo movies and adults-only comics of the era, resulting in a graphic approach to the genre.
    • Little Shoppe of Horrors. The Journal of Classic British Horror Films. Sam Irvin. (You?) | 2019 | 4.54. 'Little Shoppe of Horrors' #38 (2017) (now in an 8-1/2"x11" higher definition reprint format) presents an in-depth look at the wonderful television movie FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY (1973).
    • Good and Bad Sci-Fi/Horror Movies of the 1950s. And the Stars Who Were in Those Films. Gary Koca. (You?) | 2017 | 4.54. The 1930s and early 1940s are considered by most film historians to be the golden era of black and white horror films, and Universal Studios was the main studio to take advantage of the public's interest in this film genre.
    • Rue Morgue Magazine's 200 Alternative Horror Films You Need to See. Guillermo del Toro, Tobe Hooper, Roger Corman, Dave Alexander. (You?) | 4.53. You've seen The Exorcist, The Amityville Horror, The Blob.
    • Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film by Carol J. Clover.
    • Shock Value: How a Few Eccentric Outsiders Gave Us Nightmares, Conquered Hollywood, and Invented Modern Horror by Jason Zinoman.
    • Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th by Peter M. Bracke.
    • Creature Features: The Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Movie Guide by John Stanley.
  2. Jun 7, 2024 · Paul Tremblay, Horror Movie There are so many books about cursed productions, and still not enough!! I’ll never get tired of it. This one, from master of horror Paul Tremblay, is about a cult-classic cursed film from the 90s that is about to get a big Hollywood reboot… and the sole surviving cast member from the original, who must first confront the events from his past to help remake the ...

  3. Jun 23, 2023 · Chain Saw Confidential is a book by the late Gunnar Hansen that is the most brutally honest, realest account of the making of the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre that any fan could ever get their hands on. It allows readers to see the classic with new eyes, to find out what a hard, grueling and frequently near-fatal shoot it actually was.

  5. 6 hours ago · A well-known book in the horror lit scene for good reason, The Croning tells a fragmented tale of familial deception, cult sacrifice, and the terrifying truths that are perhaps better to forget. Donald Miller, an academic and renowned geologist, has led a largely successful life alongside his anthropologist wife Michelle, but has also suffered periods of memory loss which are getting worse.
