Season 1 and Book 1 are very very similar to one another. Season 2 and 3 are still somewhat similar to Book 2 but there are more noticeable differences. Season 4 is very different than Book 3 and parts of Book 4. Season 5 is not even in the same world as the end of Book 4 and Book 5.
The books are much much much much much better than the show. Although the show had it's moments, namely 1st and third season. The first three books are absolutely excellent, and the second and third book have tons more content that isn't in the show.
I recommend show first, then books. Both are really good, but the books are better and can take away from the show imo. If you watch first you'll be able to enjoy the show for how great it is, and then read the books and enjoy how much better they are.
