Ultimately, it's obvious that the HD editions are the best way to play the games, so that's what I recommend doing. The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection includes MGS2, MGS3, and Peace Walker, and it was released for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox 360.
Arguably has less content but it’s graphics are better. It really just depends on whether you prefer graphics and accessibility or extra content. I’d say get the HD collection and emulated Mesal Gear Solid and MGS Skateboarding. Or if you have a 3DS Snake Eater 3D is a perfectly good port.
I recommend checking out Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (Included in The Legacy Collection) for like at least 10 mins before jumping into Metal Gear Solid 2. Metal Gear Rising is not canon nor is it made by Kojima. If you want to include it in your playthrough however, the best time to play it is before Peace Walker.

Apr 3, 2022 · This collection contains three games (five if you count Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 – which are also included) so for $30.00 – this a very reasonable price. Overall score (1-100): 95 – Easily the best Metal Gear game so far and probably one of the best PS2 games I’ve ever played.
Oct 2, 2024 · MGS3: The HD collection version is really the only good way to play this one. The original PS2 versions of this game are capped at 30fps with no progressive scan option, so you are stuck playing in 480i.
