Mar 28, 2023 · Nature walks are an excellent way for children to get some exercise while enjoying the great outdoors. Here are a few physical benefits that nature walks can provide: 1. Improves cardiovascular health: Walking on uneven terrain and navigating through natural obstacles helps to strengthen the heart and lungs, improving overall cardiovascular health.
- Serves as an auditory sensory activity: As you walk down the path in your neighborhood park, your child will become alive to the sounds of nature around them.
- Awakens the tactile sense: Let your child touch and feel various things - the rough stone bench, the smooth pebble, the coarse sand, the crispy leaf, the velvety flower, the soft feather, and so on.
- Nurtures linguistic skills: Point out various things, animals, birds, and insects to your little one and identify them by their names. Encourage them to practice saying aloud the names.
- Introduces mathematical concepts: When your child plays in the park, teach them to count the number of stones, twigs, leaves, lines on the bark of the tree, and so on.
- Have a theme. I don’t do it all the time, but one thing we used to do a lot was have a slight theme to our nature walks. When we were walking we’d concentrate on finding specific things, perhaps bugs or different leaves on the trees.
- Use scavenger hunts. Even young children can enjoy nature scavenger hunts and again, like the theme idea previously, it gives some structure to your nature walks.
- Go off the path. Don’t just stick to your normal routes, get off the path and explore some places you’ve never been before! Our favourite walks often involved us wandering away from the main route and into the woods where the kids would almost always find a tree to climb and play on.
- Be enthusiastic. It’s really important that when we take kids out on a nature walk that we’re enthusiastic ourselves. Be excited about seeing bugs or hearing a bird song and don’t expect your child to just know what to do on their own and without a little bit of guidance.
