Bees, especially wild solitary bees and bumblebees, are in serious decline in the UK and globally. In the UK, we have already lost around 13 species and another 35 are currently at risk. The biggest single cause of bee decline is the intensification of farming.
Bee populations have been declining globally over recent decades due to habitat loss, intensive farming practices, changes in weather patterns and the excessive use of agrochemicals such as pesticides. This in turn poses a threat to a variety of plants critical to human well-being and livelihoods.
In recent years there has been much buzz about honeybees being under threat. But the science has moved on - and there is now a sting in the tail.
