      • Ghost movies differ from traditional horror and monster movies because they deal with the fear and mystery of an entity that might not be visible, capitalizing on the human fear of the unknown. Outside of horror, ghosts can appear in films about grief and play an instrumental role in the healing process for the characters still alive onscreen.

  2. My favourite ghost-themed horror movies! Every film on this list I'd rate at least a 7/10. I guess the list is in a vague order, but don't pay too much attention to it.

    • The Changeling. 1980. When composer John Russell moves to an old Victorian mansion in Seattle after a tragedy, he soon finds out the house is already occupied—by the ghost of a young boy.
    • The Devil’s Backbone. 2001. The Devil’s Backbone also features a little boy ghost out for vengeance. When young Carlos arrives at a orphanage during the end of the Spanish Civil War, fitting in with the other boys is hard enough.
    • Poltergeist. 1982. A red-blooded American family moves into a new home—which just happens to have been built on top of a relocated cemetery. Oh yeah, and it’s also connected to a ghost dimension: the portal is located in the youngest daughter’s closet.
    • The Others. 2001. In this terrifying, Turn of the Screw-like movie, a woman living with her two hyper-photosensitive children in post-WWII England begins to suspect there are “others” residing in the home with them.
  3. Oct 25, 2024 · From unsettling hauntings to heart-stopping scares, ghost movies are a timeless favorite in the realm of the supernatural. The films creatively explore our fascination with the afterlife, whether it's through haunting encounters, metaphysical mysteries, or even comic relief.

    • The Shining (1980) While trying to finish a novel, a recovering alcoholic author (Jack Nicholson), his wife (Shelley Duvall) and young son (Danny Lloyd) become caretakers of a desolate Colorado hotel where a sinister presence threatens to tear them apart.
    • The Changeling (1980) A recently widowed music professor (Academy Award winner George C. Scott) becomes wrapped up in a disturbing mystery about his new home — a long-vacant mansion in Seattle — with guidance from the ghost haunting it.
    • Poltergeist (1982) A real estate agent (Craig T. Nelson) and his wife (JoBeth Williams) tries to rescue their youngest daughter (Heather O’Rourke) from the evil spirits that have invaded their home and abducted her into their realm.
    • The Sixth Sense (1999) A child psychologist (Bruce Willis) with his own dark past tries to help a young boy (Haley Joel Osment) come to terms with his disturbing gift.
    • “Ugetsu” (1953) One of the best films ever made, ghost content or otherwise. But there is a ghost — lifelike one involved in a relationship with a living person and whose presence takes on a particularly devastating significance: As it is with most of Kenji Mizoguchi’s films, the real horror involves a woman living a patriarchal society.
    • “The Innocents” (1961) A governess (Deborah Kerr) becomes convinced the house where she cares for two orphaned children is haunted. The haunted threat is brought to life through an incredible use of sound design, including a pioneering use of synthesized electronic sound.
    • “The Others” (2001) A breathlessly told and richly atmospheric riff on “The Innocents,” Alejandro Amenábar’s “The Others” marries the eeriness of a classic haunted house story with the more immediate scares of a modern horror film.
    • “Carnival of Souls” (1962) A waking nightmare that’s every bit as ghoulish as its title suggests, Herk Harvey’s “Carnival of Souls” — a singular one-off as storied as “Night of the Hunter” and twice as eerie — is an indelible tour through a funhouse of our deepest fears.
