The sun is definitely meant to be spooky in Sunshine. The basic premise is that the sun is having a bad time so we're all going to die. It keeps killing people on the ship (despite its designed-to-fail protection systems), and they're all very scared of it. Cliff Curtis' character catches space madness and becomes religiously obsessed with the sun.

Commentator: Danny Boyle (director) 1.The opening Fox Searchlight logo is played backwards so that it ends on the sun hanging over the hills. 2. He was intrigued when Alex Garlandbrought him the script in part because he couldn’t think of any other sun-related movies. “I think there’s a bit in Lost in Space where they pass through the sun and go ‘p...
“This is a classic kind of eating scene.” “You can gather a lot of really good actors, ambitious young actors, and you can kill them in any order you want.” “One of the amazing nightmares about doing a sci-fi film is what do you do with a space helmet?” “I love music probably more than anything really.” Sunshine [Blu-ray]

It’s a terrific tale of sacrifice in the face of extinction ‐ a struggle to survive that ensures their own extinction ‐ and he’s right about the strength of his ensemble cast. His talk leans heavier on detail and explanation over on-set anec...
The 'it was all in a character's head' explanation has got to be one of the laziest breakdowns of a story. It's become the de facto interpretation for fans trying to intellectually dissect a movie. It's the God of all deus ex machinas but it's almost never true because it is uninspired writing.
This breakdown highlights why I think Sunshine is a misunderstood masterpiece and why it should be given a well-deserved spot among classic sci-fi. ‘Sunshine’ provides an audiovisual feast
Jul 20, 2017 · In hindsight the characters, if not the mission, are doomed from the start. Whether it’s the occasional sci-fi trope or subtler psychological tics it’s painfully obvious that none of these brave people will survive.
Sep 4, 2017 · More than in any science fiction movie I’ve seen — maybe any movie — Sunshine ‘s characters face this knowledge with a kind of fatalistic grace. They don’t pretend to be anything other...

Jul 22, 2007 · The epic struggle that almost doomed the world would NEVER be known to those on Earth. To all of humanity, they would all be remembered as heros, including the psycho killer. The ending was heart-pounding, sobering, surreal, and near perfect in my opinion.
