  1. Aug 12, 2024 · However, the movie studio A24 has been killing the game lately. From smaller, independent films to wide releases that have captured our attention, A24 horror movies have almost become a...

    • Tusk. The less said about Kevin Smith’s foray into body horror the better — it’s as though he reached a point in his career where, disillusioned with film critics in general and their reception of his work in particular, he was actively trying to drive away everyone who wasn’t already fully onboard with his self-referential sensibility.
    • Climax. More provocateur than auteur, Gaspar Noé has long subscribed to a maximalist philosophy in which too much is never enough. His movies, which feel long even when they’re not (though the worst of them, “Enter the Void,” truly is interminable at 161 minutes), are reminiscent of being cornered by a dude at a party who’s just taken LSD and wants to tell you the cosmic secrets his mind has unlocked.
    • Life After Beth. Aubrey Plaza has made many good movies since graduating from “Parks and Rec.” “Life After Beth” isn’t one of them. Released in 2014 and preceded by just 10 A24 titles — most notably “Spring Breakers,” “The Bling Ring,” and “Under the Skin” — it’s a zom-com that, like most others in the genre, struggles to get the humor/horror balance right.
    • False Positive. There are worse movies to ape than “Rosemary’s Baby.” There are also better ways to do it than this, even if the main trio of Ilana Glazer, Justin Theroux, and Pierce Brosnan all make you want “False Positive” to be better than it is — especially when it comes to that massively ill-advised climax.
  2. Critics Consensus: The Killing of a Sacred Deer continues director Yorgos Lanthimos' stubbornly idiosyncratic streak -- and demonstrates again that his is a talent not to be ignored. Synopsis:...

When it comes to horror movies, A24 has certainly done its best to (mostly) steer away from the traditional tropes of vampires, zombies, werewolves, and masked killers. As a result, the company has attracted talent like British filmmaker Peter Strickland, who followed up the atmospheric Berberian Sound Studio (2012) and the erotic The Duke of Burgu...

Bryan Bertino’s The Monster is a strange one to include on this list, if only because at its heart this is an archetypal creature feature with little more to say than “boo.” Compared to other horror movies released by A24 this can seem slight, but when The Monsterworks, its boo is occasionally bloodcurdling. Centered on a mother and daughter trappe...

Writer-director Alex Garland wanted his latest film, Men, to be as much a provocative conversation-starter as it is a singular narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. In fact, the terror at the heart of the film, which is exactly what the title implies, can never end. And along those limited lines, Menis a success in the same way an interestin...

    • The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Director: Yorgos Lanthimos. The most genuinely funny film on this list (even set against the ones that bill themselves as horror-comedies), The Killing of a Sacred Deer is writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos creating some of his best work.
    • It Comes at Night. Director: Trey Edward Shults. It Comes at Night is a great film done dirty by a misleading marketing campaign. Even while the title itself may have been somewhat of a misdirect — though it makes sense when read as being about paranoia — the trailer was the nail in the coffin.
    • Beau Is Afraid. Director: Ari Aster. A film that is almost certain to be one of the most divisive on this list is Beau Is Afraid. Another work by Aster, this is one of those films that is equal parts unhinged as it is oddly compelling.
    • Hereditary. Director: Ari Aster. Before you pull out your pitchforks that Hereditary is ranked outside the top five on this list, please know that it could have easily been much farther up.

  5. Dec 29, 2023 · Less a straight horror movie than a plaintive rumination on death, it’s still spookier than A24’s “A Ghost Story” and – what the heck? – it’s going on the list.
