The d.school is a hub for innovators at Stanford. Students and faculty in engineering, medicine, business, law, the humanities, sciences, and education find their way here to take on the world’s messy problems together. Human values are at the heart of its collaborative approach.
Feb 15, 2015 · The Stanford d.school describes the Design Thinking method in (5) steps: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. IDEO describes it in (3) modes that are often but not always sequential: Inspiration, Ideation, and Implementation. I'm assuming that these models describe the same set of activities.
The d.school’s impact can be seen in a variety of ways: within students themselves, on the Stanford campus, in the education system, and in the world at large. We aim to strengthen the world’s capacity for creativity and meaningful work. Here are a variety of ways to look at the d.school’s impact.
- Empathize. The Empathize mode is the work you do to understand people, within the context of your design challenge. During this stage, we are working with users a lot.
- Define. The Define mode of the design process is all about bringing clarity and focus to the design space. The goal of the Define mode is to craft a meaningful and actionable problem statement – this is what we call a point-of-view.
- Ideate. Ideate is the mode of the design process in which you concentrate on idea generation. We ideate in order to transition from identifying problems to creating solutions for our users.
- Prototype. The Prototype mode is the iterative generation of artifacts intended to answer questions that get you closer to your final solution. In these early stages, you should create low-resolution prototypes that are quick and cheap to make (think minutes and cents) but can elicit useful feedback from users and colleagues.
Currently, the d.school offers classes to enrolled Stanford undergraduate and graduate students. If you’re interested in taking d.school classes, you can apply to any degree program at Stanford and augment your experience with d.school courses.
