Giessen, spelled Gießen in German (German pronunciation: [ˈɡiːsn̩] ⓘ), is a town in the German state (Bundesland) of Hesse, capital of both the district of Giessen and the administrative region of Giessen. The population is approximately 90,000, with roughly 37,000 university students.
Giessen, city, Hessen Land (state), west-central Germany. It lies on the Lahn River between the Westerwald and Vogelsberg (mountains), north of Frankfurt am Main. First mentioned in 1197, it was chartered in 1248 and sold to the landgraves of Hesse in 1267. It was part of independent Hesse-Marburg.

Gießen or Giessen is a city in the German state of Hesse. It is 50 kilometres (31.1 miles) north of Frankfurt. Giessen has about 73,000 inhabitants. The university of Giessen has about 20,000 students. The German word "Giessen" means "to pour" in English, as "to pour a glass of water."
Gießen is a town separated by the Lahn River, creating eastern and western portions. In WWII a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp was located here. In 1944 most of the town was destroyed by heavy bombing, including the majority of the town’s historic buildings.
Giessen is located in Hessen, between Frankfurt and Marburg. It is easily accessible by rail or car. The city has about 78,500 inhabitants including 30,000 students, so its infrastructure, shopping and cultural offerings are pretty well adapted to that.
Founded in 1607 and with a bit under 30,000 students, Hesse's second biggest university, this is the main reason why Gießen is known outside its immediate environs.
