South Shields is a coastal town in South Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England; it is on the south bank of the mouth of the River Tyne. The town was once known in Roman times as Arbeia and as Caer Urfa by the Early Middle Ages.
- Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum. The most excavated Roman military supply base in the empire, Arbeia was built at the mouth of the Tyne in 160 AD, eventually becoming the supply depot for all 17 forts along Hadrian’s Wall.
- South and North Marine Parks. An integral part of South Shields’ seafront is this pair of Victorian parks next to the beach and the Ocean Beach Pleasure Park.

South Shields is located in the county of Tyne & Wear, North East England, one mile south of the town of Tynemouth, 96 miles south-east of Edinburgh, and 247 miles north of London. South Shields lies four miles south-east of the Northumberland border, and was historically in the county of Durham.
