"Donga" is from a Zulu word (udonga) for a dry watercourse, of which there are many in southern Africa. They were used as trenches in war, and as temporary shelters by nomadic people in peacetime. It makes sense that "donga" in PNG would describe a temporary small shelter, in a land where many lived in improvised shelter not formal buildings.
