Negan specifically says why he is killing one of them before he even chooses Abraham. They don’t always kill one from the start. They also don’t kill one person at the start no matter what. He kills Glenn because he kept warning them after only killing one person for killing two or three dozen men.
Regardless of who you choose, the outcome would be the same but I think killing Glenn was important. Out of the group he was the most innocent. Out of the entire time he was alive, he only killed one man and when he did it, it killed him inside.

I've seen some people disappointed the show chose to kill of Glenn like in the comics. Some because he was such a beloved character and other's because they thought it took away from the shock by going down the same path as the comic.
