Well in the original all Marlene did was be able to sense Aerith. I imagine what we're seeing in remake is just one of many story points that were cut from the game and reimplemented, like Jessie's personality. My guess is that she's shows people the future but they and maybe even she can't process what they see but they feel the emotions ...
