Epping is a market town and civil parish in the Epping Forest District of Essex, England. Part of the metropolitan and urban area of London, it is 17 miles (27 km) northeast of Charing Cross. It is surrounded by the northern end of Epping Forest, and on a ridge of land between the River Roding and River Lea valleys.

2 days ago · Epping was an ancient parish of 5,319 a., lying about 17 miles north-east of London and adjoining Waltham Holy Cross to the east. (fn. 1) It comprised the hamlets of Epping Upland, in the west and northwest, and Townside, in the south-east, both of which were in Waltham hundred, and that of Rye Hill, in the north-east, which lay in Harlow hundred.
Epping Town is situated in the south west of Essex about 17 miles north east of London. Astride a ridge, about 100m above sea level, it is separated from the outer suburbs of London by the forest which bears its name. The population within the Town Council area is approximately 12,000.

Separated from England's capital city by Epping Forest - almost 6,000 acres of ancient woodland - Epping is a historic market town in Essex. Despite being in London's Travelcard Zone 6, the town is surrounded by forest to the north and south, and green fields to the west and east.
Each area is an attraction in its own right but some of the more outstanding places to visit include the Epping Ongar heritage railway, the historic towns of Waltham Abbey and Ongar, the world's oldest wooden church at Greensted, Copped Hall and of course Epping Forest and Lee Valley.
