David Haller is not the typical character you think of as the lead for a new X-Men show, but he does fit in perfectly with FX's particular brand of anti-hero.

Like his character, Dan Stevens probably isn't the first person you'd think of to play the more obscure Marvel character known as Legion. His best-known role is as Lady Mary's ill-fated love interest on Downton Abbey, and he once again will play a Prince Charming (albeit a flawed one) in Disney's upcoming Beauty and the Beast. But anyone who's seen his turn in The Guest knows he's got a darker side as well, and that's what he's leaning into with Legion.

Stevens found himself immediately intrigued by Noah Hawley's take on the X-Men universe in Legion, and fully transformed himself for the role. Below, find our interview with Hawley where he talks about getting into the mind of David Haller, what is so interesting about Hawley's approach to the material and whether we'll ever get to see David's famous father. This interview contains mild spoilers for Legion's first episode, so read on at your own risk.

IGN: I know Noah is sort of remixing the Legion comics here, so what did you use as base source material to get in the head of David?

IGN: What was most interesting to you about the way Noah took David's confused mental state and made it into a physical part of the show?

Stevens: The aesthetic of the show is so unique. It was really exciting to see every department, like the camera team the costume team, everybody was kind of pushing for these weird places where they wanted their work to match the weirdness of David. And so in every episode there is at least one insane camera maneuver. I don't know, as an actor I get really fired up by standing around the camera team who is really fired up about the show they're about to do. It works both ways. It's fun to see those insane set designs and it's like wow this is such a trippy weird genius face. Let's shoot it like this. And all the actors are like, yeah, this is a really weird space that makes them feel weird. And everybody was sort of throwing in their work at a crazy level. Which is perfect for Legion because as you said that reflects the character.

IGN: What is the evolution that you can preview of David's mental state from thinking he has mental health issues to being fully aware that he has these abilities?

Stevens: There's certainly an awareness that develops. The big question is whether he has any agency or control over them with that knowledge. That's the kind of big early question I guess, is like if he's aware and if he is powerful enough to control this. That gets quite playful in terms of who is in the driving seat of David at any given time.

IGN: Noah had described this as sort being the evolution of the villain. Do you view the show that way? Do you think that David is always flirting with being a villain in the show?

Stevens: Yeah. I think that's the design. When you read the Legion comic, I don't view him as and out and out villain at all. And he occupies a very interesting space in the X-Men Universe, I think. But no, that's definitely the line we tread. There are two distinct voices at play. There are many voices at play, but those one very mischievous arc element in this series and then there's a much sort of a side of goodness and light. Yeah, that's the battle.
